DFB Cup: Leipzig is eliminated in Wolfsburg – Homburg shocks Fürth

VfB continues against Union

Defending champions RB Leipzig were eliminated from the DFB Cup in the second round this time. The cup winners of the last two years lost 0-1 (0-1) at VfL Wolfsburg on Tuesday evening and thus experienced the first big disappointment of the current season.

In front of 16,031 spectators in Wolfsburg’s Volkswagen Arena, Vaclav Cerny scored the winning goal for Lower Saxony (14th). Leipzig played outnumbered from the 55th minute onwards because Yussuf Poulsen had seen a yellow-red card. In the sixth cup duel between the two clubs, it was only Wolfsburg’s second victory.

Cerny, who came from FC Twente Enschede in the summer, gave the home team the lead in the 14th minute with a powerful shot into the corner after a fine pass from Tiago Tomas. For Cerny it was the first goal of the season in a VfL jersey. Even before the break, the Czech, who had been largely unlucky this season, could have even extended his lead, but missed miserably after a catastrophic bad pass from ex-Wolfsburg player Xaver Schlager.

After the break, the guests weakened themselves. Poulsen was shown yellow-red after a completely unnecessary foul on the halfway line, so that the Champions League participants had to operate outnumbered for more than half an hour. But the Wolfsburg team failed to capitalize on it. Due to many easy ball losses, most of the counterattack opportunities fizzled out early on.

Outsiders prevail: Fourth division club Homburg shocks Fürth

FC 08 Homburg managed the next surprise and, after Bundesliga team SV Darmstadt 98, also defeated second division team Greuther Fürth. The Saarlanders won 2-1 (1-0) on Tuesday evening and are therefore completely unexpectedly in the round of 16, which will be played on December 5th and 6th. Homburg will then enjoy home rights again as an amateur club and will be able to compete against a professional representative again.

Fabian Eisele (31st) and Joker Phil Harres (83rd) scored the goals for the regional league team. The winning goal came from a simple counterattack that Homburg played precisely and dynamically. The guests from Franconia had meanwhile equalized through Branimir Hrgota (52nd), but overall there was not enough. Midfielder Julian Green almost took Fürth’s lead shortly after the equalizer, but was denied by the strong goalkeeper Tom Kretzschmar.

Undav decides the game: VfB Stuttgart wins against Union Berlin

The decline of 1. FC Union Berlin continues unabated. The Köpenickers lost 0-1 (0-1) in the second round of the DFB Cup at VfB Stuttgart on Tuesday and suffered their eleventh competitive defeat in a row. Union coach Urs Fischer lost his nerve and was shown red at the end of the game. Deniz Undav scored in the 45th minute in front of 52,000 spectators in the duel between the two Bundesliga clubs. VfB, cup semi-finalists last season, returned three days after the 2-3 league defeat against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and celebrated their seventh win in the last eight games.

After falling behind: St. Pauli throws Schalke out

There was a celebratory mood after more than 120 minutes at Hamburg’s Millerntor. Marcel Hartel (57’/hand penalty) and substitute Johannes Eggestein’s header (102′) turned the game around for FC St. Pauli to make it 2-1 against Schalke, who had taken the lead through Marcin Kaminski (16′).
