A large fire raged in a house on the Nieuwe Dijk in Ossendrecht on Friday evening. The fire started around seven o’clock in the attic and in no time the entire top floor of the detached house was on fire, the Central and West Brabant Safety Region reported. The fire marshal signal was given around a quarter to nine.

No one was injured and the residents managed to leave the house in time.

The fire probably started through the fireplace and chimney. Firefighting vehicles from the posts in Ossendrecht, Hoogerheide, Bergen op Zoom and Berendrecht in Belgium were used to fight the fire.

The fire brigade tried to prevent the fire from spreading to an adjacent shed. Water transport was used for fire-fighting water. This allows a large quantity of fire extinguishing water to be supplied over large distances.

Due to the smoke nuisance, the Safety Region warned to close windows and doors and turn off mechanical ventilation. The smoke moved towards Antwerp. Even there there were warnings about the smoke.

Most fire engines left around nine o’clock; two vehicles were left behind to extinguish the fire.
