DEL imposes draconian punishment on repeat offenders

As a repeat offender, Ryan Olsen has been banned from newly promoted Löwen Frankfurt in the German Ice Hockey League for seven games because of a violent gang check.

The striker from Canada is only allowed to play again on January 19. The DEL announced this on Friday.

During the game against the Augsburg Panthers on Wednesday (6:3), Olsen checked opponent Niklas Langer into the rink behind the goal.

According to the Disciplinary Committee, the action was carried out “ruthlessly and with unnecessary force”. Olsen accepted a serious injury and didn’t try to “get possession of the puck”.

The 28-year-old had previously attracted disciplinary attention several times. A warning in September was followed by two bans (fighting/excessive harshness) and two major penalties.

“In view of the previous proceedings, the Disciplinary Committee considers a suspension of seven games in connection with a fine to be appropriate,” said the DEL.
