Defense is not taking any measures against employees involved in the mortar accident in Mali, in which two soldiers from the Johan Willem Friso Barracks in Assen were killed and a third was seriously injured in 2006.
Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans (VVD) does not believe it is appropriate to take ‘legal position measures’. Because, he reasons in a letter to Parliament, many of the underlying problems are caused by the way his ministry is organized.
After investigating the mortar accident, an independent committee reported last month that Defense had not acted according to the standard for years. The outgoing minister writes that he has therefore now taken various actions.
In his assessment, Brekelmans mentions that some of the personnel involved no longer work for Defense. The employees who have not acted properly are “addressed to their responsibility” by Commander of the Armed Forces Onno Eichelsheim.
