Death on Olympic construction site: security guard dies

The final preparations for the Olympic Games in Italy are currently underway. A tragic incident occurred at a construction site.

A security guard at a construction site near a sports venue for the Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo has died during a shift, according to Italian media reports. As the Ansa news agency reported, the 55-year-old man died last Thursday night while on duty at the Cortina ice rink.

That night the temperatures in the ski resort fell to minus twelve degrees. According to reports, the man from southern Italy only had a small porter’s box with a small heater available during his shifts. He should therefore check the outside area every few hours.

On the night in question, the man complained of feeling unwell and called work colleagues. They called the emergency number. The rescue workers ultimately found him lifeless and attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

Italy’s Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini was “deeply saddened” by the incident and called for a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of the death, according to a statement. The construction company Simico, which is responsible for the Winter Games, expressed its condolences, but emphasized that the man had been working on a construction site that it did not manage.
