“Deadpool & Wolverine”: First trailer for the anti-hero actioner here

A first clip was shown at the Super Bowl, but you can’t see the two interacting yet.

The superhero Deadpool will soon be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The first trailer for “Deadpool & Wolverine” was shown during the Super Bowl. Alongside Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, Hugh Jackman stars as Wolverine for the tenth time.

Deadpool as Marvel’s Jesus

The trailer shows Deadpool, aka Wade Wilson, being kidnapped from his middle-class life. This is intended to recruit him as a superhero for a mission that will take him to different time levels in the multiverse. In preparation, he is presented with excerpts from other Marvel films – for example, you can briefly see Thor, Iron Man and Captain America.

Deadpool then characteristically proclaims: “Your little cinematic universe is about to change forever.” In addition to his regenerative abilities, the comic hero with the red and black suit is known for his frequent breaking of the fourth wall. “I am the Messiah,” he continues, “I am Marvel Jesus.”

According to the title, the self-proclaimed savior of the MCU is not alone. Wolverine is placed at his side. In the original comic, the unlikely characters often appear as best friends. In the trailer, however, Wolverine can only be seen from behind and as a shadow – but the film preview ends with his claws extending. A highlight – after “Logan – The Wolverine” (2017), actor Hugh Jackman actually announced that he no longer wanted to play the antihero.

Merging film franchises

This is the third film in the “Deadpool” series. However, the first two parts are not part of the expanded Marvel Cinematic Universe, but rather play separately from it. The situation is similar with Wolverine, who has so far appeared primarily in the “X-Men” film adaptations (from 2000) and in two spin-offs focused on him. All of these films were produced by 20th Century Fox, while Marvel Studios was responsible for the MCU. However, since the Walt Disney Company, which also owns Marvel Studios, bought the production studio in 2019, the characters can be brought together.

Something similar happened with the Spider-Man character a few years ago. The original Spider-Man films starring Tobey Maguire and the reboots starring Andrew Garfield in the title role were produced by Sony. So even though the MCU was already running at that point, Spider-Man wasn’t a part of it. However, Disney then secured the rights so that the superhero – with a different cast – could be introduced into the large Marvel film universe in “Captain America: Civil War” (2016).

“Deadpool & Wolverine”: Hope for the MCU?

“Deadpool & Wolverine” will be in German cinemas from July 24, 2024. After “Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania”, “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3” and “The Marvels” (all 2023), this is the fourth film in the so-called “fifth phase” of the MCU. As the first film in the franchise, “Deadpool & Wolverine” will be rated 17 and over (R rating) in the USA. It’s also the only film Marvel Studios is releasing in theaters this year. With the exception of “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3”, the previous films in this MCU section were not successful. The studio has now pinned its hopes on the two fan favorites Deadpool and Wolverine, whose previous films were huge successes at the box office.
