Basketball coach Alex Mumbru has to stay in the hospital for a long time after his pancreatitis.

“I have to stay in the clinic for a total of three weeks to recover properly. It’s hard,” Mumbru told the “Bild”. The Spaniard had traveled to Spain after the winning EM final in Riga and went to a hospital for further treatment a week ago.

The 46-year-old coach was taken to the hospital in the Finnish Tampere two days before the start of the European Championship preliminary round and had to remain five nights due to inflammation of the pancreas. In the hospital in Spain, Mumbru will also have to undergo surgery.

Ibrahimagic hopes for Mumbrus return

Mumbru should also recover after the hospital stay, and he is said to return to the World Cup qualification as a national coach in November. His assistant Alan Ibrahimagic had also expressed this hope at the weekend. “I hope that Alex will be healthy until then and is back on the sidelines,” said Ibrahimagic in the “Sports Studio” of the ZDF.

Mumbru had missed the entire preliminary round due to illness and took over Ibrahimagic. When Mumbru took the step back to the sidelines in the round of 16, the ex-professional was clearly looking at exhaustion.

The trainer lost a few kilos. After the success of Portugal, he again transferred the chief role at the games to Ibrahimagic, who led the team around Dennis Schröder to the European Championship title with three other victories.
