Status: 03.02.2023 21:41

Alexander Zverev wins in qualifying for the Davis Cup against Swiss Stan Wawrinka. Oscar Otte had previously lost to Marc-Andrea Hüsler despite leading the set.

Alexander Zverev defeated Stan Wawrinka 6: 4 and 6: 1 thanks to a concentrated performance. After the match, Zverev was happy about the support of the spectators and that he was able to step up a gear in the second set.

Zverev: “Best match after my injury”

“It was by far my best match after my injury so far. I’m happy that I’m making progress and with my performance in general. And of course I’m happy that it’s 1-1, that’s the most important thing,” said Zverev after the game at the press conference.

Three successes are necessary for the overall victory against Switzerland. On Saturday from 1.00 p.m. the doubles game is scheduled for which Andreas Mies and Tim Pütz are scheduled for the German side. Then Zverev plays against Hüsler before Otte and Wawrinka face each other. However, changes are still possible.

Boris Becker on the German bench

Otte clearly won the first set 6:2. Hüsler also secured the second round 6:2, which is why the third set had to decide, which the Swiss won 6:4.

In front of the eyes of former Wimbledon winner Boris Becker, who took a seat on the German bench, Otte found the game strong. The man from Cologne, who didn’t start the new tennis year well, got the first break straight away and then didn’t let the first set be taken away.

In the second round, however, the 26-year-old Hüsler hit back with good serves and, to the cheers of the Swiss fans, forced the deciding set. There Otte gave up his serve twice and couldn’t find his way back into the match.
