“Psycho Killer” is back: David Byrne plays Talking Heads hit for the first time in 19 years
On the opening night of his “Who Is the Sky?” tour in Pittsburgh, David Byrne brought the legendary Talking Heads song “Psycho Killer” back to the stage. For the first time since 2006. Under a dazzling spotlight, Byrne performed with his band and dancers, all of whom appeared in blue suits. Matches his own outfit.
Byrne surprises with classics and new songs
The concert at the Benedum Center for the Performing Arts opened with the Talking Heads song “Heaven.” Followed by Byrne’s own “Everybody Laughs”, “And She Was” from the Talking Heads and “Stranger Overtones” from his collaboration with Brian Eno.
“Psycho Killer” showed up towards the end of the set. Framed by Byrne’s cover of Paramore’s “Hard Times” and the Talking Heads’ “Life During Wartime.” He also celebrated several live premieres of new songs such as “Don’t Be Like That”, “I Met the Buddha at a Downtown Party” and “My Apartment Is My Friend”.
Even though many fans were expecting a pure nostalgia show, Byrne remains cautious. “You can’t turn back the clock,” he recently told Rolling Stone. “Music means a lot at a certain moment in life. But that doesn’t mean you can go back there and restore it.”
No Talking Heads reunion in sight
Last year, Byrne briefly reunited with Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz and Jerry Harrison to promote the A24 re-release of the cult film Stop Making Sense (1984). “We became more comfortable with each other,” Byrne said. “But I didn’t feel like, ‘Let’s tour again or make a new album.’ Musically I’m in a completely different place.”
Other artists like Miley Cyrus and Duran Duran have performed “Psycho Killer” many times in recent years. But after the Talking Heads broke up in 1991 and last played together at their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, Byrne was the only one who breathed new life into the song.
50 years of “Psycho Killer”
Earlier this year, Talking Heads celebrated their 50th anniversary with an official video for “Psycho Killer.” It was directed by Mike Mills and starred Saoirse Ronan. “This video makes the song better,” the band explained. “We LOVE what this video is NOT. It is not literal, scary, gory, physically violent or obvious.”
