Darts World Cup 2024 | Drama against Hempel: Van den Bergh draws a sobering conclusion

Dimitri Van den Bergh was eliminated in the second round of the 2024 Darts World Cup. Florian Hempel once again became a stumbling block for the Belgian. “The Dreammaker” chose clear words after his defeat, but at the same time he looked to the future again.

For a long time it looked like a confident opening victory for Dimitri Van den Bergh at the Darts World Cup. The 29-year-old led 2-0 in the sets against German participant Florian Hempel at the Ally Pally. As a result, the Belgian even had three match darts, which he was unable to convert. This fact ultimately proved to be Van den Bergh’s undoing.

Because Hempel suddenly turned up the heat. The Cologne player shone, among other things, with two 10-darters and turned the game in his favor. In the end it was Hempel and not Van den Bergh who won.

“At no point in the game did I have the feeling that I was dominating,” the former Word Matchplay champion was quoted by the newspaper “Het Nieuwsblad” afterwards: “But at no point did I have the feeling that something was going wrong.”

“I had the opportunities, but here I am: I didn’t make it. I know 100 percent that I disappointed family and friends, including myself. I would have liked to win my first game here at the World Cup,” concluded Van den Bergh.

Darts star looks forward positively

At the same time, the darts star tried to look forward positively again. “I can’t wait to give my wife and daughter a big hug. You know: I can go home now and have a wonderful Christmas. And a wonderful New Year. I can celebrate a little bit because I don’t do that every year “Would I rather see it differently? Yes, of course. But somehow it’s okay,” said Van den Bergh.

The “Dreammaker” had already lost to Hempel in the second round of the 2022 Darts World Cup. Now Van den Bergh experienced bitter déjà vu in the Ally Pally, but still showed himself to be a fair sportsman on stage.
