“I will definitely work at Hertha BSC,” said coach Pál Dárdai on Saturday after the 2-1 win at VfL Wolfsburg when asked about his future – but it is still unclear which position this will be in. A decision on the coach question should be made in the coming week for the Bundesliga relegated team.
After the away win at Lower Saxony, striker Florian Niederlechner spoke out in favor of the 47-year-old remaining in the second division. “Everyone knows what they have in Pál Dárdai. He’s a club icon. Every fan loves him.” He himself “wouldn’t mind” if the Hungarian stayed, according to the 32-year-old attacker. Dárdai himself promised a decision on the coaching question over the course of the next week, after which there should be talks between the sporting management and the coach.
“Let’s stick to the order: First, licensing. Then I made an assessment, which still has to be evaluated. In the next week you will definitely find out whether we will continue working like this or not,” he said after the final whistle.

Dárdai’s contract at the Spree expires after the end of this season. According to consistent media reports, however, the club management of the Berliners can well imagine entrusting the long-standing player and coach of Hertha with the rebuilding of the team in the 2nd Bundesliga. This should happen primarily with the involvement of the own offspring, which had been trained significantly by Dárdai in recent years. “It will be a mix between the older and the young. Especially in the second half you could see that this was going to be our path,” confirmed sports director Benjamin Weber, referring to the goal of 17-year-old attacking talent Ibrahim Maza, which his coach was also happy about:
“I’ve been here for many years, I gave half my life to ensure that the youth academy was given the maximum importance. The youth work is excellent, you could see that again today: Two or three players were ‘my players’. A fantastic feeling.”
