Ex-Flick assistant Röhl to HSV?

It is not yet clear whether Hamburger SV wants to achieve promotion with its interim coach Merlin Polzin or with another name. A new candidate is now being discussed.
Hamburger SV is apparently considering signing Danny Röhl as their new head coach. As the “Kicker” reports, the 35-year-old German, who currently looks after the English second division team Sheffield Wednesday, is on the second division club’s list of candidates.
Röhl was previously assistant to Hansi Flick at both FC Bayern Munich and the German national team. However, he is not only interesting for HSV: Premier League club Southampton FC is also said to be interested in signing the coach.
HSV has a decision to make after the last first round game against SpVgg Greuther Fürth on Saturday (1 p.m./Sky). Those responsible at the club must clarify whether interim coach Merlin Polzin will be a permanent solution or whether a new coach will be hired. Promotion back to the Bundesliga remains the primary goal of the traditional club, which has been trying in vain to return to the first division for six years.
Röhl, a native of Zwickau, enjoys an excellent reputation in England. In October 2023 he took over Sheffield Wednesday, who were at the bottom of the second division table at the time, and surprisingly led the club to stay in the Championship. Röhl previously worked as an assistant coach for RB Leipzig, FC Bayern and the German national team.
