Dragoslav Stepanović achieved cult status as a coach in Germany in the 1990s. Now he wants to return to the sidelines and is taking an unusual route.
As a coach, Dragoslav Stepanović celebrated his greatest sporting success with Bayer Leverkusen – the Serb won the DFB Cup with the Werkself in 1992/93. Stepanović received cult status because of his sayings. The most legendary came in the darkest hour of his career.
With a 1-2 defeat at Hansa Rostock, the Eintracht Frankfurt team with Stepanović as coach lost the championship on the last matchday of the 1991/92 season. Frankfurt only came third behind VfB Stuttgart and Borussia Dortmund. His dry reaction: “Lebbe is leaving.” This saying is now an integral part of the language used by football fans and can be found on numerous merchandising products such as Corona masks, gin and shopping bags.
Stepanović is now 77 years old, but his love for football remains undiminished. On LinkedIn, a network for business contacts, he is currently looking for a new job as a trainer in Frankfurt. He writes: “Hello! I’m looking for a new position and would appreciate some support. If you hear about career opportunities or would just like to reach out, please send me a message or comment below.”
Stepanović now devotes himself primarily to youth football. In mid-October, the Serb was with the U11 from the Obermayr International School from Schwalbach at the “World Schools Football Cup” near Barcelona. “Stepi” led the team to victory in the age group at the tournament with 78 teams from 40 schools from 20 countries. “With Stepi we not only have an excellent coach with a lot of experience, but also a great person with a great passion for football,” said team manager Andreas Cipu in an interview with “Taunus Nachrichten”.
And maybe the post will actually help Dragoslav Stepanović to be on the sidelines again soon.
