Jasmi Joensuu is experiencing the “worst week of her life”. The winter sports athlete and her husband are getting divorced.
Finnish cross-country skier Jasmi Joensuu and her husband Juho Simonen have separated. The 28-year-old announced this in an emotional Instagram post.
“It was the worst week of my life,” Joensuu wrote alongside a photo of the couple snowboarding together. The relay bronze medalist at the 2021 World Championships spoke openly about the difficult decision and her feelings after the breakup.
“I already knew on our last trip that everything wasn’t okay,” explained Joensuu. After she returned home, it was clear that she and Simonen would go their separate ways. The past few days have been marked by sleepless nights and great emotional pain.
Despite the difficult situation, Joensuu looked back on the beginnings of their relationship. “A little over five years ago, at the ski championships in Rovaniemi, I accidentally met a wonderful man with whom I fell head over heels in love,” she wrote. Simonen helped her realize big dreams and was an important support in her life.
Joensuu was deeply saddened by the separation, but also found words of thanks. “Life outside of skiing was a lifeline for me, and my family made that possible.” She currently feels “very sad” and “disappointed”, but Joensuu is optimistic about the future: “I will find that smile again and one day say that it should be like that.”
Joensuu is one of Finland’s most successful cross-country skiers. She celebrated her greatest success at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf in 2021 when she won the bronze medal in the relay. In the 2023/2024 season she took 14th place in the overall World Cup sprint ranking.
She also represented her country at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing and came 27th in the sprint.
