Second division soccer team FC St. Pauli surprisingly parted ways with coach Timo Schultz. The club announced this on Tuesday and referred to the negative sporting development in the 2022 calendar year.

Assistant coach Loic Favè was also relieved of his duties. The club announced that there had previously been an internal analysis of the past twelve months and a discussion of the options for the second half of the season and the coming year. “We have analyzed and discussed the past few months intensively and unfortunately feel compelled to act now,” said sporting director Andreas Bornemann. “The long winter break is the right moment to set the course for a successful second half of the season.”

The training will initially lead assistant coach Fabian Hürzeler. The table-15 wants to see which constellation will continue in the second half of the season. according to club president Oke Göttlich by January.

“We always have to keep an eye on the overall well-being of FC St. Pauli – and our sporting record in the 2022 calendar year is that of a relegated team.”

According to Bornemann, the talks after the end of the first half of the season did not provide sufficient starting points for new concepts. “We have long recognized various patterns in the sporting problems, including the fatal weakness away from home, a lack of balance between defense and offense, a lack of further development, but also the inability to turn games after going behind,” said the 51-year-old. “We can’t count on winning our home games.”

“Take all measures to keep the class”

Göttlich added: “Our sporting record in the 2022 calendar year is that of a relegated team. That must change immediately and sustainably so that we can take all measures to keep the class,” said the club president, who at the same time recognized Schultz’s merits at FC St Pauli paid tribute: “Whether as a player, assistant coach, coach or simply as a person: Timo Schultz was, is and will always be welcome at the Millerntor and will be a part of FC St. Pauli.”

However, the club’s press release did not contain a statement from the outgoing head coach. In July 2020, the then U19 coach was promoted to head coach with the first team. Schultz has been a player, assistant coach and youth coach at FC St. Pauli since 2005.
