“Hor a disorder: the coprolalia, the impulse to say inadequacies ». So she told in one recent interview with Corriere della Sera Diana Del Bufalo. The actress, Roman comedian and presenter, known for her straightforward and unfiltered way of doing things, reported that, according to what she was explained to her, the coprolalia is a branch of the Tourette’s syndrome and she talked about how she happens to utter inadequate and out of context sentences especially when she is bored and they are all formal. But what is coprolalia and how does it manifest itself? Here’s what you need to know.

Coprolalia: what is it?

With the term coprolalia means a uncontrollable impulse to utter obscene phrases or words even when circumstances do not make them justifiable or environmental situations indicate them as absolutely inappropriate. It is a disorder that can be present in the subjects suffering from obsessive neurosis but which also represents a component of Gilles syndrome de la Tourette. In this case, the problem occurs in association with other mental disorders and motor functions, such as nervous tics.

As stated on the website of the Onlus Tourette Romefounded in 2018 by a group of parents and professionals who deal with tic disorders and associated problems, the “coprolalia is the emission of words or phrases deemed offensive (in the society where the person lives). These words they are uttered absolutely out of context, are emitted in the most bizarre moments, do not have to do with feelings of anger and do not express the real thought of the tourettic person. Tourette’s syndrome is often referred to as the “Disease of bad words”. In reality only two out of ten tourettics have this problem “.

Coprolalia and those ‘bad words’ out of context

The peculiar characteristic of coprolalia is therefore that of manifesting out of the emotional context. Unlike rage swear words, which are clearly related to what is happening at that moment or the emotions that the person is experiencing, in case of coprolalia the vulgar or obscene words are repeated throughout the day and during the speeches without a particular “color”. These are phrases or words that they intervene within the discourse like motor tics, that is, without interruption e without a specific trigger.

The emotional consequences

It is not difficult to imagine, as the Onlus Tourette Roma points out, that the emotional consequences of this disorder they can be important. “Coprolalia involves many social and relationship problems – specifies the non-profit organization – especially in a child who, of course, is asked to be polite and respect the rules. A boy with coprolalia therefore lives with a perennial feeling of mortification for a behavior that in fact cannot be controlled ”.

Tourette syndrome: what is it?

As we have said, coprolalia can sometimes be a symptom of Tourette’s Syndromea pathology that takes its name from French physician Georges Gilles de la Tourette who was the first, in the last century, to describe its characteristic symptoms.

Tourette’s syndrome appears in childhood but it can persist even in age adult. It is also a disease that can be associated in some cases with obsessive-compulsive disorder or with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Typical tics can be vocal – such as vocalizations, coughs, or spoken words – or physical, such as repeated hopping, sudden jerking of the head or grimacing of facial expression.

Tourette syndrome: is there a cure?

Even if the tics usually they are not a serious problem for general health of a person, in children as well as in adults with Tourette’s syndrome these symptoms can have important psychological consequences. Such manifestations can in fact involve a discomfort that often brings to social isolation, to states of embarrassment but also to one reduced self-esteem.

There it causes of the syndrome is still poorly known even if you think that the‘origin may be neurological, in particular associated with the malfunction of certain areas of the brainknown as the basal ganglia, responsible for controlling body movements.

Although there is no specific therapy for Tourette’s Syndrome, there are treatments that can help. For example, to keep the main symptoms under control, it can be useful a course of cognitive behavioral therapy.
