Concertgebouw will have a building shell with photovoltaic cells

At the beginning of October, the Concertgebouw will start facade work to remove the terracotta tiles from the west facade as a precaution, pending a new facade and roof covering for the building. The Concertgebouw immediately seizes the necessary replacement of its entire building envelope as an opportunity in the transition to renewable energy. With an emphasis on sustainability.

Investment of ten million euros

All options are mapped out, but the partners are primarily looking at the possibilities of generating solar energy via a new building shell with integrated photovoltaic cells (BIPV). The investment cost for a new BIPV building shell is provisionally estimated at around 10 million euros. The project aims to achieve the highest possible annual energy payback effect.

The operation of the Concertgebouw as an arts center and conference venue, with more than 1,500 events per year – concerts, dance performances, corporate events and conferences – is not compromised. The Concertgebouw has existed for 21 years.
