Community service demanded for throwing fireworks during FC Emmen celebration

An 18-year-old from Zwartemeer is accused of throwing fireworks into the crowd at the FC Emmen championship ceremony. A woman suffered permanent hearing damage during the celebration on April 30 last year. The Public Prosecution Service (OM) wants him to receive a community service order of 200 hours, of which 100 hours are conditional.

The case was heard behind closed doors because the teenager was 17 years old when he committed this offense. On the day in question, FC Emmen celebrated the championship with a tour in an open bus through the city.

Mayor Eric van Oosterhout gave the green light for the tour at the last minute that morning. Additional measures had been taken for the safety of the supporters, Van Oosterhout wrote on Twitter.

The teenager from Zwartemeer threw a piece of fireworks on Stationplein. Several adults and two children suffered minor injuries. A woman was in worse condition. To this day, she struggles with hearing damage and loss due to ringing in the ears (tinnitus).

If it were up to the Public Prosecution Service, the suspect would also pay the victims compensation of almost 1,800 euros.

The verdict is on October 5.
