Bundesliga soccer club VfL Wolfsburg has hired Pirmin Schwegler as its new sports director. The former Swiss national player succeeds Sebastian Schindzielorz at the “Wolves”, from whom the Lower Saxony team parted ways in mid-November.

Schwegler is moving to the Autostadt from league rivals Eintracht Frankfurt. The 38-year-old has been working as director of professional football for the Hessians since the beginning of this year. The long-time Bundesliga professional, who played for Hannover 96 among others, previously worked in the same position at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and was chief scout at FC Bayern Munich.

Pirmin Schwegler is a great character – then as a player, now as a manager. Close to the team and the team behind it. We are happy that he is now a ‘wolf’.

According to media reports, VfL is transferring a transfer fee of 500,000 euros to Eintracht for Schwegler. Both clubs did not provide any information about the modalities of the change – as is customary in the industry.

Wolfsburg's Managing Director Sport Sebastian Schindzielorz

The Bundesliga soccer club VfL Wolfsburg has made the second personnel decision in the sporting crisis. Coach Paul Simonis had previously been fired.

Schicker and Mann said no to the “Wolves”.

However, the former Bundesliga professional (262 appearances) was probably not the first choice for the 2009 champions. In any case, before his signing it became public that Andreas Schicker from TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and Hannover 96 managing director Marcus Mann had rejected the car club. In mid-November, the Lower Saxony team parted ways with coach Paul Simonis and sports director Schindzielorz in order to react to the ongoing sporting decline.

Schwegler and Christiansen have to clarify the coaching question

One of Schwegler’s first tasks will now be to decide the coaching question together with sports director Peter Christiansen. Interim coach Daniel Bauer should have a good chance of a permanent promotion.

Under the direction of the 43-year-old, the “Wolves” picked up four points in three games and presented a much improved form compared to the matches under their predecessor Simonis.

Frustration with Maximilian Arnold from VfL Wolfsburg

VfL Wolfsburg suffered two defeats on Saturday. Andreas Schicker’s rejection in particular hits the “Wolves” hard. The situation is becoming more and more threatening.

Marcus Mann, Sports Director at Hannover 96

Wolfsburg is looking for a new sports director. The 96 managing director won’t: According to media reports, the man will stay in Hanover.
