Bine Norčič suddenly found himself at the center of Norwegian ski jumping – without knowing about it. Now he breaks his silence.
When the Norwegian national ski jumping team hit the headlines at the World Cup at the beginning of the year because of tampered with suits, Bine Norčič unexpectedly came into focus. The Slovenian was supposed to step in as the successor to the suspended national coach Magnus Brevig. However, just three days later, the chapter was already over. Now Norčič spoke about the time – and corrected some representations.
“That’s not true. I never agreed. This episode shows what a huge chaos there was,” said the 44-year-old in an interview with the Swiss “Blick”. At the time, Norčič was coaching the B group in the second-tier Continental Cup when news of the scandal reached him – initially only via a detour. “When I first saw the video, I couldn’t believe it. It was a huge shock,” he recalled. “I didn’t know anything about it. Although I noticed a lot.”
He found out about his alleged new role as head coach of the Norwegian team not from officials, but from a call from a journalist. He called him, says Norčič, and told him that he had been officially announced as the new coach. “I had no idea what he was talking about. Then he explained to me that those responsible had announced me as his successor.”
Norčič refused and even offered to resign as coach: “I didn’t want to be part of this chaos,” he explained. The 44-year-old was allowed to continue his work in the youth sector until the end of the season. However, the mood in the team changed after the scandal. “I felt a distrust. That hurt.” Norčič’s team also suffered from this: “We sometimes felt like aliens. Everyone looked at us strangely,” said the former ski jumper.
He has now left time behind him. Norčič now works as the national coach of the Swiss ski jumpers.
