Coach before saying goodbye? Official remains vague

Is Anthony Barry leaving FC Bayern again? The Munich assistant coach should be offered a position as national coach. The Irish Football Association remains tight-lipped on the matter.

The Telegraph reported on Wednesday that Barry was one of the candidates for the vacant Ireland national team position. The national football association is looking for a successor to Stephen Kenny after missing qualification for the 2024 European Championship.

“We are still speaking to a number of candidates in this regard. I won’t say who any of those candidates are, but the process is progressing well,” FAI CEO Jonathan Hill was quoted as saying by the Irish Independent. The Irish association boss therefore does not want to let anyone look at his cards.

In the corresponding media report in the daily newspaper, Lee Carsley and Chris Hughton are listed as other names. Carsley currently looks after the England U21 national team. Hughton is the national coach of Ghana.

Transfer fee to FC Bayern would be due

According to “The Telegraph”, Barry is also an issue in Ireland. The 37-year-old only joined FC Bayern in April at the request of Thomas Tuchel.

The Englishman acts as an assistant coach at Säbener Straße and has a contract until 2025. In the event of an early departure, a corresponding transfer fee would probably be due.

Tuchel and Barry had worked together at Chelsea in the past. In 2021, the duo won the Champions League together with the Blues.

“Our relationship is very respectful and friendly. I have admired Thomas from the beginning. We have a lot of parallels – how we work and how we see football. We try to push each other and improve,” Barry admitted on the club’s website FC Bayern’s homepage in May provides an insight into their shared relationship.
