Status: 18.10.2022 2:30 p.m

Defending champions SC Magdeburg made a successful start to the Club World Cup. The Wiegert team didn’t give the valiantly fighting end of the day handball players from Sydney University the slightest chance.

Perfect start for SC Magdeburg at the Club World Cup: In the first game of Group A in front of only 250 spectators in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, the defending champions from Saxony-Anhalt dominated the team from Sydney University, which competed with five German exile handball players, at will and drove an easy 41:23 (20:8) victory.

Magnusson is back with four goals

When SCM keeper Mike Jensen had to reach behind him for the first time after Mateusz Matlach from Poland’s backfield throw, almost eleven minutes had passed and the German champions were already 6:0 ahead. Returnee Omar Ingi Magnusson, whom coach Bennet Wiegert shot in the first half, had already put his name on the top scorers list (2-0/3). The Icelander scored four times in total – all of them flawless from the seven-metre point.

Unlike the Magdeburg jerseys, he had previously for intensive medical checkups in his native Iceland caught the plane from Frankfurt/Main to the Arabian Peninsula. Since the cases with the SCM equipment after dpa-If information did not arrive at the destination until Tuesday evening, the team wore unfamiliar and poorly flocked black rental shirts from the host association.

Wiegert team only lets up for a moment

Sydney’s goalkeeper Tim Schubiger was able to distinguish himself with some good saves, especially in the first quarter of an hour – but thanks to goals from Lucas Meister, Magnusson and Lukas Mertens (3), Magdeburg went from 11: 5 to 16 within just over four minutes :5 pulled away (24th), the Swiss couldn’t prevent it either. 20 seconds before the halftime siren, national player Philipp Weber increased the lead to twelve goals for the first time (20:8/30th).

The people from the Elbe town followed on from that after the change of sides. Kay Smits quickly increased the lead to 24:9 (35th). Only in the middle of the second half did the SCM let the Australians take a deep breath, who used this for a four-goal run to 21:33 (48th). As a result, Magdeburg increased their concentration again, only conceded two more goals in the last twelve minutes and rushed to 41:23 (60th). The best pitcher of the game was SCM left winger Lukas Mertens with seven goals.
