“There is no law that prohibits the use of chalk in a public place,” Mouton wrote on Facebook. “Not in Bruges, not in a place with a healthy city council. Our mayor forbids it. So after a few peaceful protests for Palestine, I received bills that amounted to up to €20,000.”

Mouton will stop these chalk actions for the time being – on the advice of his lawyer. He has started a fundraising campaign to pay the invoices.
