In Wimbledon, some favorites have already said goodbye to the women’s competition this year in the first week. The last example: Madison Keys, who lost in two sets on Saturday against Laura Siegemund. However, a co-favorite continues to keep himself relatively harmless to the classic lawn in London: Iga Swiatek.
The Polish, who only had a bad start in the second round, but then quickly caught, won her third-round encounter against the American Collins on Saturday after a strong performance with 6: 2 and 6: 3.
Top 10 already thinned out
In addition to Swiatek, only Aryna Sabalenka, who had the British hope Emma Raducanu, and Wunderkind Mirra Andreeva, who defeated Hailey Baptiste on Saturday, from the top 10 seed list in the round of 16 in Wimbledon. Emma Navarro followed the trio the early Saturday evening through a victory over defending champion Barbora Krejcikova.
Against Collins, at least Australian Open finalist from 2022, Swiatek pressed the accelerator from the start, quickly got an early break in the first set and shortly afterwards one-which the American no longer recovered. After 39 minutes, the first round was already 6-2 for the Polish.
Swiatek can be expected
In the second set it went on directly. Collins, who actually wanted to end her career in 2024, but then decided to continue, did not find a remedy against Swiatek at all and repeatedly scattered slight mistakes. A bad combination. The tournament with the favorite used this, also got an early break in the second set and marched up to 6: 3 from then.
In the thinning favorite field in Wimbledon, Swiadek showed emphasis that she can be expected this year. So far, the Polishin in London has never got beyond the quarter -finals. It is quite possible that there is more for you this year. In the round of 16, the Danish Clara Tauson is waiting for Swiadek.
