Clara Ponsatí sees Spain “willing to kill” if the independence movement resurfaces

The former Minister and MEP of Junts Clara Ponsati has assured this Wednesday that he sees the State “willing to kill” if the independence movement will star in a new clasha movement that has been asked to assume costs and the risk of deaths.

“The State, if necessary, uses violence as much as needed. Does this mean that they would be willing to kill? I am convinced”, she highlighted at a press conference to present her book ‘Molts i ningú. Embastat de memòries i altres històries’ (Editorial La Campana).

According to Ponsatí, in no case does he suggest that the Catalans have to use violent tools, but they do have to be willing to “sacrifice”and adds that the argument that the independence struggle cannot be carried forward due to the risk of harming himself does not serve him because, in his opinion, this means that the State will always prevail.

In the book he recalls that in a meeting held on October 26, 2017 -one day before the DUI- he told the former president of the Generalitat Carles Puigdemont that, as long as he used the argument of I had to stop to avoid deathsthey could never be independent.

The former Minister also believes that if they pulled forward there could be bloodbut if the State was willing to do it, the independentists had to be willing to pay this price: “With the approach of doing nothing if there is a risk of death, we would never do anything. It is not necessary for everyone to be willing just take a risk is a risk that must be taken“.

She is also convinced that there will be a new attack after 2017, and although she considers that it’s taking too long to arrivebelieves that, sooner or later, the independentists will have to get down to it.

However, he has not wanted to make short-term forecasts because he considers that the independence movement is “stranded and does not have the political tools to materialize a new attack”, despite the fact that he is confident that this will happen. “A policy of resignation decapitalizes our forces“, warned Ponsatí, who believes that the force and action of the State has undermined the pro-independence political leadership and its willingness to assume costs.

For this reason, he defends the need for a new articulation of the independence movement, either from the parties or from civil society, after being critical in the book with the functioning of the ANC when it was chaired by the current secretary general of Junts, Jordi Sànchez, and with the role that Junts, ERC and the CUP are playing.

MEP

His critical position with Junts, has specified, it does not affect “practically nothing” to her activity as an MEP of this match, and he stressed that Puigdemont knew who he was putting on the European list and that they have not had any kind of difficulty or friction. “I don’t think I have to consider my role as an MEP. I think I do a job that is positive for the fight for the freedom of Catalonia. My plan is to continue doing it,” stressed Ponsatí, who after verifying that he is independent, has denied who wants to promote a new party when asked about it.

It has claimed that the European Parliament he is a loudspeaker for the Catalan cause and that they are a “murga”, especially for the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, who must listen to their interventions.

In addition, he assures that Puigdemont is a “celebrity” in the European Parliament and that there is a sector that no longer hides that Spain makes them uncomfortable, he has assured, something that he believes is the merit of the three Junts MEPs.

Puigdemont and the CxREP

Although he did not want to delve into the role of the Consell per la República (CxRep), chaired by Puigdemont, he did remark that Junts’ speech and the work carried out by the pro-independence entity are “dissonant“.

And about if Puigdemont should leave the presidency of Junts and lead only the CxRep, the MEP has defended that he should do what he wants and that it is compatible for him to lead both: “I don’t think it is the main problem that Junts and the CxRep have”.

In the book, Ponsatí defines Puigdemont as an astute, cultured person with a great dialectical abilitybut he also admits that he is a difficult man to describe, that he does not communicate much, that he does not ask, and whom he never saw in charge during his time as president.

avoid prison

He also assures that, despite his brief stint at the then Government of Puigdemont, he already warned that she was unwilling to go to prison if she could help itsomething that he believes was “very clear” that they would try, although he specifies that other ministers only foresaw that they could impose fines and disqualify them.

In fact, he reports that on October 27, 2017, before going to the plenary session that approved the DUI, he already left a piece of luggage prepared in a small backpack to travel to Paris (France), and that everyone in the Parlament was very scared and that she was angry because she knew “that everything was a comedy, that nothing would be done later”. Now, after four years, she considers that as long as she lives in Europe, except in Spain, she will be able to avoid jail, and she is very clear that they will have to work hard if they want to “cage” her because it will not make it easy for them, she warns.

In addition, it argues that if all the members of that government had been “exiled”, they would have been stronger and the resistance within Catalonia as well.
