Circles: Amazon wants to offer mobile communications to Prime customers – Telekom shares under pressure

NEW YORK / SEATTLE (dpa-AFX) – According to circles, the US retail giant Amazon is threatening to stir up the US mobile communications market. The Internet and tech group is negotiating the lowest wholesale prices with US network operators in order to offer customers its own products, the Bloomberg news agency reported on Friday, citing informed people. Amazon is talking to Verizon and the Deutsche Telekom subsidiary T-Mobile US, but also to the satellite television provider Dish, which has its own mobile communications licenses. Carrier stocks tumbled on the report.

T-Mobile US lost almost 7 percent, Verizon and AT&T between 3 and 5 percent. Deutsche Telekom (Deutsche Telekom) papers fell about 6.5 percent in Germany. Dish, on the other hand, is up 14 percent and Amazon shares are up almost 2.5 percent in early trading on Wall Street.

Amazon is always looking for ways to add value to Prime customers, but mobile is not currently on the agenda, a company spokeswoman said. According to Bloomberg, Amazon could offer cellular for $10 a month or even free with a Prime subscription to further bind customers to its subscription program of free shipping, video and audio streaming.

Mobile phone contracts are generally more profitable in the USA than in Germany, for example, but often also contain several connections per contract. According to analysts, Amazon has been struggling with stagnant subscriber numbers since a price increase for its Prime membership in the USA, as consumers are currently struggling with high inflation./men/lew/ngu
