Chantal Janzen rebukes TV colleague Matthijs van Nieuwkerk quite severely in her magazine. She writes in it that she does not understand how anger outbursts like his come about.

Chantal Janzen’s magazine is largely devoted to anger this month. “Getting Angry for Dummies,” it reads on the front cover. Below that: ‘Are you reading along, Matthijs?’ It is of course a reference to Matthijs van Nieuwkerk, who is still under fire for alleged misconduct at De Wereld Draait Door.

Chantal intervenes

Matthijs seems to have behaved quite maniacally behind the scenes and according to Chantal that is disapproving. She herself always intervenes in such incidents, as can be read in her editorial. “It’s been years. I walked into the TV studio and suddenly heard a huge screaming,” she recalls in the &C.

She continues: “A colleague went all out on an editor because she was ‘too close’. I got pissed off. What on earth possesses you to react like that? Can’t you ask her in a nice way if she wants to distance herself more? When other colleagues and I said that, they didn’t know what to say anymore and agreed with us.”

Equivalent

Everyone is equal to each other, including Matthijs and an editorial lad, Chantal thinks. She writes: “People need to realize that you are equal as a human being, regardless of your position. A cameraman, sound boy or dresser, everyone has his or her task in a company.”

It seems that Chantal thinks the fuss about Matthijs is justified. She says: “That makes me furious, of people who go completely crazy against someone else for nothing. And especially from people who abuse hierarchy, or rather: see it wrong. (…) They feel superior to another.”

sucks

Yelling doesn’t work at all either, according to Chantal. “I hate it. If it really gets too much, I even have to laugh. Not out of discomfort, but because I think it’s ridiculous.”

You can get angry as a TV presenter, she concludes. “But some really go too far. I think that sucks, because they are people I admire and find very capable for this profession, but that you rant at colleagues like that is just not normal and a matter of social inability.”
