It will remain possible to see the northern lights in the Netherlands in the coming evenings, especially in clear winter weather between 10:30 p.m. and midnight. The so-called solar activity will be high until March 1, the KNMI expects. A lot of solar activity can cause the northern lights.

The auroras are created when charged particles from the sun collide at speeds of hundreds of kilometers per second with nitrogen and oxygen particles high in our atmosphere. This gives the particles in our atmosphere an increased energy level. To get rid of this increased energy level, the particles emit energy in the form of light: the auroras.

The northern lights could be seen in various places in the Netherlands on Sunday evening. The natural phenomenon was observed from the Wadden Islands to the south and on the west coast. In addition to the high solar activity that is necessary to see the auroras, it must also be dark and not too cloudy.
