All 465 seized dogs from Eerselse breeder have a safe place

All dogs seized from the controversial breeder in Eersel last January have found safe homes. The animals have been taken care of, for example, at shelters or other approved reception locations throughout the country.

It was quite a job to bring the 465 dogs to the shelter locations. “The problems with these dogs vary widely,” says a spokesperson for the NVWA. Many animals had dental or coat problems, such as tartar and mange. “But there are also dogs with serious behavioral disorders, such as kennel syndrome.”

“It can take months for a dog to be ready for adoption.”

A dog with kennel syndrome is virtually unsocialized. These animals have often been in a kennel for a long time, and many together, and are often very anxious. Everything outside the kennel is unknown, and therefore very scary. So they are not used to interacting with people. “It can take months for a dog like that to be ready for adoption, maybe longer.”

In addition, some seized animals were pregnant. They must remain at the shelter locations until the puppies are old enough to go to a new owner. “It therefore takes a while for these animals to be relocated.”

“The dogs haven’t found a golden basket yet.”

However, according to Karen Soeters of House of Animals, the reality is a little less rosy. “The dogs went to a so-called storekeeper in January. The animals have not yet found a golden basket.”

In addition, Soeters is concerned about the dogs that remained with the breeder in January. It concerns 159 dogs. “And I have heard that some of these animals have already had puppies again. So there are even more.” The doors of the breeding farm must be closed on March 15. “Where do these dogs go then?”

“There are so many animals with trauma among them.”

The first dogs are expected to be put up for adoption this week via the Animal Protection website. “That will be a huge job. There are so many animals with traumas. It can take months before they are adopted,” Soeters thinks.

In November 2022 it was announced that the breeder will have to close its doors. According to the municipality, the breeding does not fit within the zoning plan. In the months that followed, there were several raids on the breeding farm and 465 animals were seized. The dog breeder was allowed to keep 159 animals during the last raid.
