National player Antonio Rüdiger von Real Madrid was punished after his head-to-head in the round of 16 of the Champions League against Atlético by UEFA. The central defender conceded a one-game lock for European competition “due to violation of the basic rules of good behavior”, but this was exposed to probation for one year. In addition, Rüdiger has to pay a fine of 40,000 euros.
The 32-year-old is eligible to play in the quarter-final first leg at FC Arsenal next Tuesday. In the second leg against city rival Atlético, after the penalty shoot-out in the zeal of the battle, Rüdiger had drawn himself to make the well-known head-to-time gesture with his right thumb.
Two of Rüdiger’s teammates were also sanctioned due to misconduct. Like Rüdiger, France’s striker Kylian Mbappé (26) suffered a lock from a game on probation (1 year) and a 30,000 euro money penalty. Dani Ceballos (28) has to pay 20,000 euros. No disciplinary procedure was initiated against Vinicius Junior (24), whose behavior was also examined.
Atlético and the fans of the host club had felt and insulted by the cheering scenes of real professionals. According to its own statement, the European Football Union UEFA had appointed an ethics and disciplinary inspector to examine the behavior.
