Champions League: Lionel Messi sets two new records in PSG win

At 3-1 in Haifa

After a moment of shock on the second day of the Champions League group stage, Paris Saint-Germain still completed the mandatory task. On Wednesday evening, the French champions fell 1-0 down in the 24th minute, having scored for the Israeli champions. (37′), (69′) and (88′) then turned the game around for PSG. The Argentinian superstar improved two of his own records.

His first goal of the season saw him surpass Karim Benzema by at least one goal in the ‘premier class’ for most consecutive seasons. Messi has been successful every year since 2005/06, now 18 seasons in a row. The Frenchman from Real Madrid, who is currently out with a muscle injury in his right thigh, can still play in the remaining games of the season.

Haifa was also the 39th club Messi had scored against in the Champions League. He had previously shared this record with Cristiano Ronaldo (38), who is only competing in the Europa League with Manchester United this year.

Benfica Lisbon remains flawless: 12th win in 12th competitive game under Schmidt

No record set yet, but Roger Schmidt is on a club hunt at Benfica Lisbon. The 55-year-old also won 2-1 (1-1) at Juventus on Wednesday evening, his twelfth win in the twelfth game since moving from PSV Eindhoven to Portugal. At the start of the term, no Benfica coach collected more than 15 three-pointers in a row.

João Mário (43rd minute / penalty kick) and David Neres (55th) turned the match around after the early deficit (4th) and extended the series. “We want to win every game. For us and for our fans. You should be proud of us. We want to continue the winning streak,” said goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos after the game.
