SC Magdeburg has reached the final Four of Handball Champions League for the third time. Thanks to an energy performance in the final phase, the German champions turned the quarter-final second leg at KC Veszprem and continued thanks to a 28:27. The decisive goal fell four seconds before the end. The first leg had run out of 26:26.
Portner holds draws at the break
The game began with a lot of intensity and a VeszPrem circuit runner Ludovic Fabregas, which was initially well laid out again. The Frenchman, successful in the first leg in all nine attempts, continued his series. Either he met or took out a seven meter. At 6:10 after a quarter of an hour, the SCM had to be careful not to hit the back early. The European Cup -made Magdeburgers passed this task. With its own 4-0 series, the Bennet team Wiegert made the equalization (20th). It also did not hurt that the Icelander Aron Palmarsson already got its second time penalty in this phase. At the duel in Magdeburg, the back area player became the second best scorer of the Hungary. Until the change, SCM keeper Nikolai Portner with four parades recorded the 13:13 in just eight minutes.
Magdeburg, here Omar Ingi Magnusson, only led at the very end.
Great catch -up of the SCM
After the break, it looked like a success of the hosts for a long time. They used their possibilities aggressively, while the SCM attack is always on the middle block. At 22:26 (50th) the encounter almost seemed. But now the Wiegert team turned up nervously. Gate around goal Magdeburg came up against nervous hosts. The Hungarians were considered a kind of title favorite after the group phase. But in the last ten minutes they only met once. For 27:27. Then they awarded the opportunity to lead. Gisli Kristjansson took advantage of this four seconds before the end and pushed Veszprem into the valley of tears. In addition to Bundesliga club Füchse Berlin and Nantes, Magdeburg is in the final tournament on June 14th and 15th in Cologne. As a fourth team, record winner FC Barcelona qualified against Pick Szeged despite a 29:30. The Catalans won the first leg in Hungary 27:24.
Magnus Saugstrup was one of the strongest SCM players.
In Veszprem, Felix Claar became the best thrower of the SCM with nine goals, Kristjansson contributed eight goals. “The last ten minutes were incredible,” said Magnus Saugstrup: “A game goes 60 minutes. As long as we fight, we have a chance to win.”
