Casablanca Beats: the review of the film by Nabil Ayouch

C.ASABLANCA BEATS
Genre: Drama, musical ✦✦ 1/2
Direction: Nabil Ayouch. With Anas Basbousi, Ismail Adouab, Zineb Boujemaa, Meryem Nekkach

Running for the Palme d’Or in 2021, Ayouch’s film is set in Sidi Moumen, the ghetto district (it is surrounded by a wall that separates it from the rest of the city) from where the suicide bombers of the 2003 attacks left.

There, in the arts and crafts school created to keep young people off the road, arrives a rapper convinced that music is freedom and talent the way to emancipation.

Ayouch, former author of Much Loved on the life of a group of prostitutes in Morocco (and therefore prohibited at home), all the right questions are asked (obscurantism, the role of women, the role of destiny) and, halfway between fiction and documentary, let the kids find the answers.
