Scary and funny masks in Val di Fassa

The carnival events that color the villages of the Val di Fassa are numerous, and often of very ancient traditions. The Ladin Carnival of Campitello experiences its highlight on February 19th. Like every year, on the Sunday before Shrove Tuesday, in Piaz de Ciampedel, there are many parades masks wearing the typical “facères da bel and da burt” (masks, “beautiful” or “ugly”, finely carved in wood by local artists) and perform witty sketches and jokes, involving the spectators. As per tradition, the parade is opened by the “Grop de la Mescrès de Cianacei e Gries” (Group of the masks of Canazei and Gries) who will perform with Lachè, Bufon and Marascons, the “guide” masks, in their richly decorated costumes.

Colorful and fun events are held throughout the valley until February 21st. Of particular note is the Carnival of the Fountains in Vigo di Fassa, the festivals in Moena where there are the Arlèchins who, with a pointed hat, cowbells, faces covered by a white veil and colored trousers, run after the children scaring them with a whip, and the Lonc, very tall masks that hide men on stilts covered by a white sheet and show up at dusk, frightening people. The party continues on the ski slopes, because here you can indulge yourself in seven ski areas for a total of about 200 km of tracks. With the Dolomiti Superski ski pass you can also move to nearby ski areas and have fun on the most famous ski tours such as the Sellaronda and the Great War Tour. Info: www.fassa.com
