Who knows if the Monaco motor show which took place in the first days of September has, in some way, worked as a driving force, the fact is that sales of new cars in the European Union are growing. Not a sudden increase but still a plus sign. From January to September, registrations grew by 0.9% for a total of 8,057,335 new license plates in circulation on European roads according to data disclosed by Acea, the European association of car manufacturers. Growth becomes more sustained if the United Kingdom and the EFTA countries, i.e. Iceland, Norway and Switzerland, join the 27 EU members. In this case the increase is 1.5%, overall 9,928,527. The contribution made by the United Kingdom in terms of volumes is strong, with market growth of 4.2% in the first nine months of 2025 (1,578,172 license plates). As already mentioned at the beginning of the month, however, the Italian market is contracting by 2.9% for a total of 1,167,995 pieces marketed.

hybrid and electric

As regards the best-selling engines in the European Union, the favorite remains the hybrid, mild and full, with 34.7% of sales, a growing percentage and a volume of 2,793,079; petrol cars attract 27.7% of sales but are down 18.7%; electric cars account for 16.1% of registrations, with a volume of 1,300,188 cars. Diesel cars correspond to 9.3% of the market while plug-in hybrids are 9%.
