“She’s doing it very well”
DFB captain? National coach gives Bayern star hope

Since Alexandra Popp’s resignation, there has been no permanent captain in the German national team. But now national coach Christian Wück has commented on the captaincy – and makes a hint.
According to national coach Christian Wück, Giulia Gwinn has high hopes of leading the German footballers to the European Championships as captain. “She does very well on the pitch and is very reliable. She is also an absolute leader off the pitch and takes responsibility,” said Wück in the SID interview: “There is a lot to be said at the moment for her to remain captain.”
After Alexandra Popp said goodbye, the new national coach Wück first wanted to get to know the squad before making his decision. Since Gwinn had previously represented Popp, the armband for the captain initially went to the right-back from champions Bayern Munich.
But now Wück would like to make a decision and “definitely discuss the topic with the team in the first course in February.” Then the DFB women go to the start of the Nations League against the Netherlands (Breda/February 21) and Austria (Nuremberg/February 25).
With a view to the European Championship in Switzerland (July 2nd to 27th, 2025), Wück would like to ensure clarity in goal soon and “announce a number one to the team as early as possible”. But this doesn’t have to happen in February. His predecessor Horst Hrubesch had promoted Ann-Katrin Berger (34) to starting goalkeeper just before the Olympics.
In his first four international matches as national coach, Wück also gave playing time to three young goalkeepers alongside Berger. Both Stina Johannes (24/Eintracht Frankfurt) as well as the debutants Sophia Winkler (21/SGS Essen) and Ena Mahmutovic (21/FC Bayern) were each allowed to play one game.
