Captain Koolhaas left a woman and six children. In 1949 His wife died and the children were spread over the family. Three more of them live there. “Two of their children emigrated to Australia in the 1950s, the third to Canada,” says grandson Engel Koolhaas.
“The story about my grandfather is certainly known within the family, but there was not much talk about it. My father Ben, he was ten when his father died, spoke with warm feelings about the period in Middenmeer. That defense now, with the recurrence, donates attention to our grandfather, we only think that is now, so many years after the war.”
