Surprisingly, after years of requests and broken dreams, Capcom unveils the return of Onimusha and Okami 2 from Clovers, Kamiya’s new studio.

On the occasion of The Game Awards 2024, Capcom had good news to share with fans of its iconic Onimusha series: the franchise is about to return from obscurity with Onimusha: Way of the Sword, which will kick off a complete reboot of the IP. To get an idea of what it will look like, you can watch the first trailer for the game below, ahead of its expected launch in 2026:

The Onimusha Reboot —

Capcom created something of a cult classic with Onimusha: Warlords for PS2 in 2001, which spawned an entire franchise with annual hack ‘n slash action adventure releases. However, after 2006’s Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, the series began to die out and players had to wait until 2012 for its continuation in the form of Onimusha: Soul, after which another long hiatus followed. In 2018 a remastered version of the first chapter was published and the last episode of the series came out in 2024 with Onimusha VR: Shadow Team, a rather radical change of pace compared to the original annual launches.

Kamiya’s Clovers on Okami 2 —

But that’s not all for Capcom’s announcements. He wanted it and now he’s got it: Hideki Kamiya and his new studio, Clovers, are developing Okami 2 – an announcement that comes 18 years after the original title launched on PS2. For now the game is only called “Okami sequel”, but it is reasonable to imagine that later it will take the name of Okami 2. For a first look at Okami 2 from The Game Awards 2024, find the trailer below:

Okami is another one of those Capcom cult classics from the PS2 days: it didn’t sell well and even Kamiya ended up being a little dissatisfied with the final product, but those who bought the game ended up liking it a lot. Hideki Kamiya left Capcom in 2006 to found Platinum Games, which created series like Bayonetta, and announced his farewell to the company in 2023. Now he’s back with the new studio Clovers, which appears to have taken its name from Clover Studio, the Capcom subsidiary where Kamiya worked from 2004 to 2006 and which created Okami. While it’s not quite the return to Capcom that many fans wanted, Kamiya’s wish to finally make an Okami sequel is coming true.
