There is always rubbish washing up on beaches, but the recent storms Conall and Darragh have seen more than normal washed up. “The westerly wind blew all the waste floating in the water onto the beach,” says Roland Bisschop of the Texel Plastic Free foundation.

He and a few other volunteers go to the beaches of Texel every two weeks to clean up all the waste. On the tourist beaches people can throw their waste in waste bins and on the other, quieter beaches there are ‘plastic cages’ where waste can be thrown.

There was trash on every meter of beach

“We combed the entire beach yesterday,” says Bisschop. “From the lighthouse to south of post 9, and there was something on every meter. From small things, such as bottles, bags and broken bottles to jerry cans and fish boxes. Some fish boxes that washed ashore, as you could see, had been in the water. A total of 900 kilos of waste was removed from the beach.”
