Today, Minister David van Weel of Justice and Security visited the National Criminal Investigation Department in The Hague, on the occasion of the International Day against Corruption.
During the visit, the Minister highlighted the damaging impact of corruption on the rule of law and society:
“Criminals can only work with help from within and therefore always look for the weakest spot. We should not be naive and make employees resilient and aware of criminal influences. That is why a decisive, government-wide approach to corruption is necessary,” said the minister.
From 2025, the Ministry of Justice and Security will structurally make €5 million available to tackle corruption, part of which is intended for the National Criminal Investigation Department. The investigative capacity and expertise of the National Criminal Investigation Department will be strengthened and investments will be made in the purchase of advanced IT tools, data processing facilities and additional training. These investments, which were previously included in the JenV budget for 2025, are aimed at tackling corruption more effectively and guaranteeing the integrity of the government.
The National Criminal Investigation Department plays a crucial role in investigating crimes committed by (semi-)government officials, especially in the field of official corruption. Thanks to the additional resources, the organization can further expand its capacity and expertise, in order to continue the fight against corruption even more intensively.
