Third best BVB average since 2000

Borussia Dortmund’s club boss Hans-Joachim Watzke has questioned the form of his unconditional commitment to coach Edin Terzic at the start of the season. “I don’t know if I would say it like that again,” said the 64-year-old on the “Bild Sport” program on “Welt TV” about his statement: “We will be following the path of Edin Terzic for the next few years. Period, out.”

He was surprised “that such a wave was made of it. My credibility was questioned, it’s all nonsense. I am convinced that Edin Terzic is an excellent coach. I expressed that. No more and no less”. It is clear that “at some point the future will come to an end. I also know that football is a results sport. If you lose 15 times it will be difficult”. So far, in his second BVB engagement as head coach, Terzic has averaged 1.95 from 73 games – only Thomas Tuchel and Lucien Favre have had a better average since 2000.

The fact that BVB was unable to shape a new one with a different coach after the end of the Jürgen Klopp era was “not a BVB-specific problem. I also don’t have the feeling that any era has emerged at Bayern after Guardiola. We won’t have the really long epochs anymore anyway. I think Edin is already the third longest-serving coach out of 18 Bundesliga coaches, and that says something.” In fact, four coaches in the top German league have currently been in office longer than Terzic.

The addition of ex-professionals Nuri Şahin and Sven Bender as assistant coaches is anything but a disempowerment of the coach, especially since it was his wish. “This is a sign of intelligence and strength,” says Watzke: “Only people who can do something get people who can do something. People who are unsure get some kind of plum.”

BVB boss Watzke: DFL investor “definitely this season”

Watzke, also chairman of the supervisory board of the German Football League, will soon present it to its investor. “I think that we will definitely have a result this season,” he also explained: “Whether that is on March 15th. or 15.4. will be, is not that important for me. What is crucial is that you can see during the pre-selection that we have achieved what we wanted to achieve. Maybe a little more, without going into detail.”

The DFL reduced the number of applicants from the initial five to the two companies “Blackstone” and “CVC” in a unanimous decision by the executive committee. A financial investor is expected to pay one billion euros for a percentage share of the TV revenue. The contract should have a maximum term of 20 years. In any case, “both partners guarantee that they will remain completely within the red lines we have defined,” says Watzke.

He showed understanding for the fan protests in recent weeks, but criticized the form. “When there is a protest, it is sometimes unpleasant, but it is legitimate. But we still have to work a bit on how to deal with it,” said the 64-year-old: “Democratic discourse is desired. But if you constantly hear ‘Shit DFL’ or alternately ‘Shit DFB’, then that’s a bit low-key for me. The active fan scene also needs to know that it only represents a certain current within a club and should never have such an absolutist claim.”

Watzke currently gave the Bundesliga as a product a B+. “That’s a decent grade. “My parents would often have been happy if I had brought them home,” he said with a laugh. To improve, we need a German champion other than FC Bayern. “But what is more important is that there is a championship fight. We had that last year and you will have that this year too.”
