BVB consultant Sammer: Bundesliga is only looking for “excuses”

For ex-European champion and BVB advisor Matthias Sammer, a second German final in the Champions League is currently utopian.

When asked how far away such a game is currently, the 55-year-old replied in an interview with “Münchner Merkur/tz”: “Not measurable. Light years!” FC Bayern is a final candidate every year, “but all the other German teams are far away”.

For Sammer, currently a consultant at Borussia Dortmund, the reasons are obvious. “Because we don’t name our deficits, but are first-class in making excuses. That’s not how I got to know competitive sport. You have to have courage, we have to have more courage!” Demanded the former DFB sports director.

Sammer is currently part of a task force at the German Football Association that aims to lead the national team into a better future.

Exactly ten years ago, FC Bayern and Dortmund faced each other in the only German final in the premier class.

Bayern won 2-1 at Wembley. Previously there had only been a Bundesliga duel between Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Mönchengladbach in the 1980 UEFA Cup.
