Borussia Dortmund cannot relax. On Tuesday evening, coach Nuri Sahin may face the final of his sporting future in Dortmund. There is confusion about a possible successor.
While Nuri Sahin is fighting for his job in the premier class, there is already a lot of discussion in the background about a Dortmund shadow list.
In the penultimate league phase match of the Champions League against FC Bologna (Tuesday from 9:00 p.m. in the LIVE ticker), Sahin should receive a personal final. If his team disappoints again, his days as Borussia coach are likely to be numbered.
One name that kept coming up as a possible successor candidate was Erik ten Hag. The Dutchman, who had to pack his bags at Manchester United in October, is considered a promising candidate if BVB sends Sahin out the door.
The “Ruhr Nachrichten” initially reported on Monday that Ten Hag was not a candidate for BVB. “Reputable sources” had “strongly assured” the newspaper that the 54-year-old could be “excluded” as Sahin’s successor.
Hoeneß an option in summer?
But a little later, the TV channel “Sky” followed up and emphasized that the ex-United coach was still being traded in Dortmund as a possible Sahin successor. “Contrary to reports to the contrary, he remains a candidate,” it said. The Dutchman shouldn’t see himself as a firefighter, but rather wants to build something in the long term.
According to the report, BVB’s list also includes Roger Schmidt (currently without a club) and Niko Kovac. The Croatian coached VfL Wolfsburg until March 2024 and was most recently linked to Besiktas.
According to Sky, some BVB officials are also said to have Stuttgart coach Sebastian Hoeneß in their sights. The coach of the runner-up is only a candidate for the summer. The coach is said to have an exit clause in his contract, and his contract in Stuttgart runs until 2027.
This clause is reportedly linked to the condition that the signing club plays in a European competition.
BVB is currently only in tenth place in the Bundesliga table and would not currently be qualified for European business.
