RB Leipzig has suffered another setback in the fight for the Champions League places. Coach Marco Rose’s team had to be content with a 2:2 (1:1) draw at FC Augsburg and is now three points behind fourth place. The 1:1 (1:1) against VfL Bochum was also not enough for “premier class” aspirants Eintracht Frankfurt. In the middle of the table in the Bundesliga, promoted team 1. FC Heidenheim celebrated a 2-1 (2-1) win at SV Werder Bremen.

There were renewed protests from fans at the Bundesliga games on Saturday, some of which led to long interruptions. In several stadiums, tennis balls flew onto the grass, and there were protest posters and chants. The background is the resistance of some fan groups against the entry of an investor into the German Football League that has been simmering for months.

Before a cracker against Real: RB Leipzig missed a boost in mood at FC Augsburg

RB Leipzig missed the turnaround in the Bundesliga before the Champions League clash against Real Madrid. In a fast-paced showdown with FC Augsburg, the team couldn’t get past a 2-2 (1-1) draw. The counter-prone Leipzig team missed out on putting pressure on Borussia Dortmund and VfB Stuttgart in the long-distance duel for a direct Champions League starting place. The Augsburg team have been without a win against RB in 15 competitive games, but they collected a valuable point with a fantastic performance in front of 28,510 fans.

In the lively exchange of blows, the Leipzig team proved their air superiority three days before the first leg of the round of 16 in the “premier class” against Toni Kroos & Co. Loïs Openda (39th minute) and Benjamin Sesko (52nd) both scored impressively with their heads. Openda (81′) then failed with a weakly taken penalty kick to goalkeeper Finn Dahmen, who had previously knocked over Mohamed Simakan. It was a great chance for the second three in a row. Phillip Tietz (35th) and Augsburg’s captain Ermedin Demirovic (60th), who played for Leipzig’s youth team, with his twelfth goal of the season gave their fans hope for their first home win this year.

Fans again protested in Augsburg against the entry of an investor into the German Football League. “Sustainable growth instead of quick money” read one banner. The game had to be briefly interrupted in the 24th minute after a few tennis balls and even a folding chair were thrown into the penalty area by Augsburg goalkeeper Dahmen. Some Augsburg fans also left their block and positioned themselves in front of the fence overlooking the pitch.

Heidenheim and ex-Werderan’s best crash Bremen’s birthday party

1. FC Heidenheim crashed SV Werder Bremen’s belated birthday party. Six days after the 125th anniversary of the traditional Hanseatic club, the newcomer dampened the mood with a 2-1 (2-1) win at the Weserstadion. In front of 41,000 fans and numerous football legends in Werder’s history, Lennard Maloney (12th minute) and former Bremen player Jan-Niklas Beste (18th) scored for the strong Heidenheimers. Romano Schmid (19th) kept the party spirit going with his connecting goal. With the win, Heidenheim climbs to eighth place in the table for the time being.

There was already plenty of entertainment in the stadium before kick-off. The club celebrated the special birthday with the fans – the founding date is February 4th, 1899. Numerous Werder legends such as Ailton, Diego and Max Lorenz were invited as guests, and the fans showed a huge choreography before kick-off. The spectators – with the exception of the guest block – put on green and white plastic ponchos and presented various banners. A banner showed the greatest successes in the club’s history. Despite all the celebrations, fans from both camps protested in the second half with banners and chants against the German Football League’s (DFL) investor decision.

Another setback for Eintracht Frankfurt: 1-1 against VfL Bochum

Eintracht Frankfurt suffered another setback in the fight for a place in the Champions League with a 1-1 (1-1) draw against VfL Bochum. After the defeat at 1. FC Köln (0:2), which was criticized by the Bundesliga club’s management, the Hessians were once again unable to convince. For Bochum, who were weak away from home, winning points was important in the fight to stay in the league.

In front of 57,500 fans, Omar Marmoush (14th minute) gave Eintracht the lead. Moritz Broschinski (17th) equalized for the guests. Eintracht coach Dino Toppmöller copied the supposed success strategy from Bochum. “They keep it simple and do it well,” the coach said before the game. The goal was to play more straightforwardly in front of the opponent’s goal – but that only worked in the early stages.

On the verge of collapse: Union wins against Wolfsburg after a long break

Update 6:11 p.m.: In a game shortly before it was canceled due to massive fan protests, 1. FC Union Berlin achieved an important victory in the fight against relegation. During Nenad Bjelica’s comeback to the coaching bench after his suspension, the “Irons” defeated coach Niko Kovac’s VfL Wolfsburg, who were still winless this year, 1-0 (1-0) on a long afternoon in the An der Alten Försterei stadium.

The game was interrupted for a total of over 30 minutes after tennis balls were thrown by fans from both camps. The background is the resistance to the DFL’s investor plans. The goal was scored by Danilho Doekhi (45th + 25th). In the table, the Union team in 15th place increased their lead over 1. FC Köln in the relegation spot to six points. The Rhinelanders have to play against VfB Stuttgart on Sunday.

Darmstadt 98 wins a point against Gladbach in Borussia Park

Bottom of the table SV Darmstadt 98 has earned a point in the relegation battle, but has now extended its negative streak to 14 games without a win. The Hessians drew 0-0 at Borussia Mönchengladbach and are still in 18th place with twelve points. The game was interrupted for several minutes due to fan protests.

Three days after the canceled cup semi-final in Saarbrücken, the Gladbachers remained winless in their fourth game in a row and are on the edge of the relegation zone. In front of 46,121 fans in Borussia Park, the hosts dominated the game for long periods, but had too little attack. The guests were particularly convincing in their fighting spirit.
