Bundesliga: BVB: Mats Hummels is still a year away

Borussia Dortmund and Mats Hummels have agreed to extend his contract, which expires in the summer, by another year until 2024.

The club announced this on Wednesday (05/24/2023). Mats Hummels has been playing in his hometown Munich since the 2007/08 season with a three-year break Borussia Dortmund and played 468 of his 586 club games in the black and yellow jersey.

“I am very pleased that Mats Hummels is staying at Borussia Dortmund for another year. He identifies very closely with our club. BVB and Mats simply belong together,” says CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke.

With BVB, Hummels won the German Championship in 2011 and 2012 and the DFB Cup in 2012 and 2021. As a player of Borussia Dortmund he became world champion with the national team in 2014. “It’s very good that Mats, with his experience and leadership skills, will still be available to our young team in the coming season,” said sporting director Sebastian Kehl.

Longer deliberation process

In the current season, Hummels has played in 29 Bundesliga games as well as in four DFB Cup and Champions League games.

“Everyone knows how much fun I have playing at Signal Iduna Park with our fantastic fans. I didn’t take the decision lightly. It was a long process of deliberation. Now, at the end of the season, I can say: I have really looking forward to another year,” said Hummels.
