British Prime Minister Johnson cancels working visit after family member takes positive corona test Coronavirus what you need to know

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has canceled a planned visit to a vaccination center because a family member has tested positive for the corona virus. His cabinet reports that. However, family members of corona patients are not obliged to be in isolation according to the applicable rules in England. That is only the case if they test positive themselves, or show symptoms of the virus. Johnson lives with his wife Carrie and their two young children in the official residence at 10 Downing Street.

Johnson was supposed to pay a visit to a vaccination center in the northwest of England today, but that is now cancelled. The British Prime Minister has been under fire all week for attending an illegal garden party with his staff on May 20, 2020, in full lockdown. Johnson apologized to the British House of Commons on Wednesday, but at the same time claimed he thought it was a work-related meeting.

Call to resign

This is yet another piece of evidence of illegal gatherings in Downing Street during a lockdown period. Whether the prime minister’s apology can calm people’s minds is therefore uncertain, especially given the discontent within his own Conservative party. Scottish Tory leader Douglas Ross yesterday joined Labor’s call for Johnson to honor himself and resign. There is also a lot of talk in the British press about the cold support of Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak towards the Prime Minister. The latter is regarded as a rising star within the Conservative party, and may be gearing up to replace Johnson.

When 54 Conservative MPs request the Tory party’s influential ‘1922 Committee’ in writing, a confidence vote is organized on Johnson’s fate. Douglas Ross announced on Wednesday that he would do so. Meanwhile, the report of top government official Sue Gray, who has been appointed to investigate the allegations against Johnson and his entourage, is awaited. That is not expected until next week.
