Colombia intercepts record shipment of 14 tons of cocaine en route to the Netherlands
The Colombian National Police has made one of the largest drug seizures of the past decade in the port of Buenaventura: 14 tons of cocaine destined for the Netherlands. The cargo was mixed with plaster and hidden in a container identified thanks to sniffer dogs. According to authorities, the seizure prevents the distribution of some 35 million doses of cocaine, with an estimated value of more than $388 million to criminal networks. It is the largest seizure in years and fits within the Esmeralda Plus strategy, which aims for a ‘total offensive’ against drug trafficking. President Petro calls the operation historic, especially now that Colombia was wrongly removed by the US earlier this month from the list of countries that fully cooperate in the fight against drugs, according to Bogotá.
