Sergio Roberto de Carvalho, 60, “was extradited to Belgium on Thursday in accordance with the highest security standards,” police said in a statement. The police website shows a video of the criminal being transferred under heavy security from a prison in Budapest to the airport, where he boarded a plane belonging to the Belgian army.

Sergio Roberto De Carvalho has been wanted since November 2020 after the seizure in Brazil of “more than $100 million from the criminal organization he led,” according to the Brazilian Federal Police. Interpol reported on June 22, 2022 that De Carvalho had been arrested in Budapest. Brazil then requested extradition.

According to the Hungarian court, De Carvalho is “one of the main distributors of drugs exported from Brazil to Europe”. The United States had also issued an international arrest warrant against the man, a Belgian investigating judge issued a European arrest warrant.

The Belgian surrender request may have been related to a major action against drug smuggling from Brazil to Europe in November 2020. The ‘Brazilian Escobar’ may later be transferred to the US or Brazil on the basis of extradition requests.
