Supporters of the two clubs clash on the way to their respective club’s game. The fight has consequences.

On Saturday morning there was a clash between fan groups from VfL Wolfsburg and FC St. Pauli at Hanover main station. According to the police, two larger groups were involved.

The Wolfsburg fans were on their way to the away game at HSV, St. Pauli played against Eintracht Frankfurt in the afternoon. As a video shared online shows, several men beat each other and threw barriers. When the police arrived, those involved fled. According to the police, there were bottles thrown, physical injuries and insults, a spokesman for the Federal Police confirmed.

The investigators are currently evaluating the recordings. Police say the videos are part of an ongoing criminal investigation.

The approximately 400 Wolfsburg supporters initially continued their journey. However, their train was stopped in Hamburg-Harburg at midday on the instructions of the federal police. Pyrotechnics and objects were found on site that were apparently carried as protective weapons. The personal details of around 150 people were recorded.

The police also intervened in Frankfurt. There, St. Pauli fans were taken off a train and checked. Over 200 club supporters were not allowed to attend the game and were excluded by the police.

“In view of the events at Frankfurt Central Station, FC St. Pauli is calling for de-escalation,” the Hamburg-based team said in a statement. And also criticized the police: “Against the background of the information known so far about the incident in Hanover, the police measures seem at least questionable in terms of proportionality.”
