Brave Ajax only capitulates in the final phase against stronger Liverpool

Ajax suffered a defeat in the Champions League tonight at Liverpool. At the atmospheric Anfield it became 2-1. Mohammed Kudus undone Mohamed Salah’s opening goal after almost half an hour of play, but in the final phase Joel Matip still headed the home team to the win.

Ajax started with the same eleven names as in the 4-0 win at Rangers FC last week. That meant Mohammed Kudus was once again on the point of attack. After a sloppy opening phase, in which both teams were scanning each other, The Reds ahead. Mohamed Salah was released in front of Remko Pasveer after a pass from Diogo Jota. The Egyptian wing attacker made no mistake and controlled the 1-0 into the ropes.

After the opening goal of the home team, Ajax was initially searching. Nevertheless, the team from Amsterdam soon equalized. After a quick attack from the left, the ball ended up at the feet of Mohammed Kudus thanks to a good cross by Steven Berghuis. The Ghanaian occasional striker did not hesitate for a moment and shot hard through the bottom of the bar. Despite a number of great opportunities for Liverpool, both teams sought the changing rooms with a 1-1 score at half time.

Even after tea, Liverpool continued to dictate the game. Fortunately for Ajax, the English team did not create any great imposed opportunities in the first fifteen minutes after the break. Liverpool insisted, brought an extra attacker on the field, but Ajax held their ground with verve. With exactly fifteen minutes to play, Daley Blind on the other side got a dot of a chance. The left back, who played his 100th Champions League game, headed a Tadic cross just centimeters wide of the enemy’s goal.

Over the line

Ajax goalkeeper Pasveer seemed to keep the team from Amsterdam going, but in the 89th minute it still went wrong. A corner from Konstantinos Tsimikas landed on Joel Matip’s head. The Liverpool defender headed in, despite a frantic attempt on Dusan Tadic’s line: 2-1. In the injury time Ajax was no longer able to force the equalizer.

Due to the defeat, Ajax remains on three points in group A of the Champions League. Liverpool now also have three points. Tomorrow Napoli and Rangers FC will play against each other in Glasgow.
